Why Inspection Choice Matters
Inspection is not just a machine choice. It helps the whole SMT line improve. First, SPI checks paste before placement. Next, AOI checks visible faults. AXI checks hidden joints. So, choose tools by the risk in your product.
What SPI Checks
SPI measures paste on PCB pads. It finds low paste, extra paste, offset, and bridge risk. Therefore, SPI is useful for fine pitch parts, BGAs, QFNs, and small chips. It stops problems before placement.
What AOI Checks
AOI uses cameras to find visible faults. For example, it can find missing parts, wrong polarity, offset, and tombstones. Also, it gives fast feedback. This makes AOI a good fit for most SMT lines.
What AXI Checks
AXI sees through packages and hidden joints. So, it is useful for BGAs, QFNs, and dense boards. However, AXI costs more than AOI. Use it when hidden-joint risk is high.
Choose by Product Risk
Use SPI when paste is a main risk. Use AOI for visible placement and solder faults. Then, add AXI for hidden joints or high-reliability work. In many lines, SPI and AOI cover most risks.
Plan Data and Response
Inspection data must lead to action. First, set clear defect codes and repair rules. Next, send feedback to printing, placement, and reflow. Then, review repeated faults by model. This improves yield over time.
Build Your Inspection Strategy
Send your BOM and PCB data. Also, include the package list, output goal, and quality needs. Then, a supplier can plan the right inspection mix. This keeps the line both effective and practical.
Next Step
The best inspection choice balances defect risk, output, quality targets, and budget. A connected SPI, AOI, and AXI plan can improve yield while keeping the line practical to operate.
